Exemplar, Type Carved in Stone
As a branding content curator, I seek work that combines research, craft, and clear purpose. Letters from Sweden’s Exemplar is a monumental outcome, thirty years of continuous type design. Completed in 2026, the family spans Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, and Arabic, with ten styles. Each letterform balances classical epigraphic proportions with modern optical corrections and sculpted terminals. The project supports 370 languages, offering design systems fit for global brands and cultural signage. Its digitized specimens invite hands on testing across responsive interfaces and historic sets. A short documentary tracks its material realization and craft in Pietrasanta.
As a curator I value projects that translate digital research into enduring physical artifacts. Exemplar’s street signs carved in white Carrara marble are not mere props, they are prototypes. Skilled carvers used traditional chisels and mallets to produce deep V cut incisions that capture light. The digital specimen complements the stone, with dark mode testing, weight sliders, and Bézier inspectors. Designers will appreciate the multi script utility, the historical stylistic sets, and meticulous typographic tuning. Read this story to see how enduring materiality elevates type systems, and to gather inspiration for identity work. Worth exploring.
